1. Introduction

The Quick Haul Long is a Tern cargo bike designed to evolve with your family’s needs, and we’re here to help you familiarize yourself with its basic functions and safety precautions. If you prefer to watch the following explanation, check out the Quick Haul Long Owner Briefing video on YouTube.

2. Adjusting the Bike Fit

Ensuring a comfortable and correct posture during any ride on your Quick Haul Long involves two essential adjustments.

2.1. Adjusting the Saddle Height

  1. Open the quick-release lever and slide the seatpost to your desired height. Be careful not to exceed the minimum insertion indicator marked on the seatpost.
  2. Securely close the quick-release lever once you’ve found a comfortable height. Ensure the lever is properly shut to prevent the seat from sliding or lowering during your ride. You can tighten the quick release by adjusting the clamp screw nut.

2.2. Adjusting the Speedlifter Stem

Next, adjust the Speedlifter stem, which allows you to set the handlebar height to your preference.

  1. Open the quick release and adjust to your desired height.
  2. Once done, close the quick-release lever.

Whether you prefer a more upright or sportier position, the Speedlifter stem offers just the right fit. A proper bike fit can help you ride longer without experiencing soreness or numbness, making it important to adjust the bike to suit you.

3. Bosch E-Bike System

3.1. The Quick Haul Long is a Pedelec

The Quick Haul Long is a pedal-assist electric bicycle, also known as a pedelec, which means the motor system only provides power while you pedal. It's important to remember that the motor stops assisting once you reach the maximum speed allowed in your area.

3.2. Bosch E-Bike System Basics

One of the standout features of your Quick Haul Long is the Bosch e-bike system, which includes the display, motor, and battery. Let's dive into the details of each component.

3.3. Bosch Purion Display

Your Quick Haul Long comes equipped with the Bosch Purion system, which you'll use to control the bike's functions. The Purion display has four buttons: the power button, the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons, and the Walk button.

  • Safety first: Ensure your feet are off the pedals when turning the system on to avoid any unexpected acceleration.
  • Change between the four support modes: The (+) and (-) buttons allow you to switch between the assist levels: Eco, Tour, Sport, and Turbo, with Turbo being the most powerful.
  • Essential data at your fingertips: The display provides useful information such as speed, trip, range, and battery level. To go through this information, press and hold the (-) button.
  • Automatic energy-saving shutdown: If the bike and display are idle for more than 10 minutes, the system will automatically shut down to save energy.

3.4. Walk Assist

The Quick Haul Long has a handy Walk Assist function, which helps you push your bike easily when going uphill or carrying heavy cargo. This can be activated by pressing the Walk Assist button at the bottom of the display.

  • Before activating Walk Assist: Ensure the bike is in one of the four e-assist modes. Walk Assist will not activate if the motor system is set to "Off."
  • To start Walk Assist: Press the "Walk" button at the bottom of the display remote. When "Walk+" appears on the display, press and hold the (+) button to engage the walk assist. The Walk Assist speed varies depending on the gear you’re in. Higher gears provide more Walk Assist from the motor.
  • To stop Walk Assist, simply release the (+) button.

3.5. Integrated Lighting System

The Quick Haul Long features an integrated lighting system for both the front and rear. These lights are powered by your bike’s battery, eliminating the need for charging or changing separate batteries.
To turn the lights on or off, press and hold the (+) button on the display. A light icon will appear on the display to indicate their status.

3.6. Battery & Keys

Your Quick Haul Long comes with a Bosch Cargo Line motor, which is powered by a removable battery.
To install the battery, slide it onto the battery mount and push it down until it clicks into place. To remove the battery, use the provided key to unlock it from the mount.
Your bike includes a pair of identical keys for unlocking the battery and the frame lock. If you lose both, you can apply for replacements using the serial number on the keys. It's important to note and save this serial number, so we recommend emailing it to yourself and registering your keys with Abus.

3.7. Charging the Battery

The battery can be charged either on or off the bike, but always ensure the e-bike system is turned off and that there is no moisture on the battery or socket area before charging.

3.7.1. Charging the Battery ON the Bike

  1. To charge the battery on the bike, open the rubber lid on the battery mount, plug the connector into the socket, and then plug the charger into an electric outlet.
  2. The display should show that the battery is charging.
  3. Be careful not to damage the prongs on the charger when plugging it into the socket. Once plugged in, your battery will start charging. Ensure you’re charging on a fireproof surface to ensure maximum safety.

3.7.2. Charging the Battery OFF the Bike

  1. To charge the battery off the bike, insert the key into the lock, turn, lift, and pull out the battery. Once the battery is off the bike, plug the connector into the socket, and plug the charger into an electric outlet.
  2. The indicators on the side should light up to show that it is charging. To check the battery charge off the bike, you can press the power button.
  3. To reinsert the battery, place it on the battery mount and push the battery down until you hear a click.

Safety Tip: Please remember to always remove the key from the lock after inserting the battery to ensure it doesn’t get disconnected and that no one removes it when you’re not around. 4. Important Bike Parts and Functions

4.1. Changing Gears

Your Quick Haul Long comes with a trigger shifter designed to manage speed and pedaling resistance effortlessly. The indicator displays whether you're in high or low gear. Push the larger lever to shift to a lower gear, and push the smaller one to shift to a higher gear.

We highly recommend changing gears as you would on a non-electric bike—downshift to a lower gear before stopping or ascending steep hills and upshift as you accelerate or descend. This method ensures an optimal cadence and helps prevent premature wear on the drivetrain.

4.2. Braking

Your Quick Haul Long has a set of hydraulic disc brakes on the front and rear for excellent stopping power, even with added weight.

When looking at your handlebar from the rider’s position, the rear brake lever is on the right, and the front brake lever is on the left. In a few countries, this orientation may be reversed, so we recommend double-checking before your first ride if you’re not sure.

Please be aware that suddenly pulling the brakes hard can have dangerous results, particularly in wet or slippery conditions. In general, aim to apply even pressure to both brake levers when you need to stop.

Your brake pads are consumable parts and may be the first part on your Quick Haul Long that’ll need replacing. Different factors—such as how often you ride your bike and how much you are carrying—will affect the lifespan of your brake pads. So, make sure to keep an eye on them.

4.3. Frame Lock

The Quick Haul Long also has a handy ABUS frame lock on the front wheel. As mentioned earlier, the key for this lock is the same as the battery key. This means you won’t have to worry about bringing multiple keys with you.

To lock your Quick Haul Long, turn the key, slide the knob down until you hear a click, and pull the key out. Keep in mind that you can't remove the key unless the frame lock is locked, so always ensure the lock is firmly closed before attempting to remove the key.

5. Vertical Parking and Rolling

Your Quick Haul Long offers the convenience of standing and rolling vertically, which is particularly useful for navigating or parking in tight spaces. This positioning also gives easy access to the drivetrain during maintenance tasks. While it may take some practice, it is achievable after a few attempts.

5.1. How to Vertically Park the Quick Haul Long

  1. Stand next to your bike on a flat surface, holding the handlebars with both hands. You can stand on whichever side is most comfortable for you.
  2. Apply the rear brake and walk backward until the bike stands upright. Focus on walking rather than pulling the bike backward.
  3. Ensure that all contact points on the rear of the bike touch the floor and that the surface is flat and even.
  4. Avoid leaving the front wheel facing upward to prevent potential swinging; gently turn it to rest against the bike.

5.2. How to Roll the Quick Haul Long

  1. Hold the handlebars, apply the rear brake, and walk forward until the front wheel touches the ground. Exercise control while walking forward; avoid attempting to catch the descending bike.
  2. Alternatively, when the bike is vertical, tilt it forward and gradually release the brakes to start rolling.

Mastering the vertical parking and rolling technique enhances the maneuverability and accessibility of your Quick Haul Long in various situations.

6. Daily Riding Checklist

Safety should always come first. To ensure that everything on your Quick Haul Long functions properly, we recommend you conduct the daily ABCQ test to check your air pressure, brakes, chain, quick release, and more.

7. Maintaining Your Quick Haul Long

7.1. Clean and Lubricate Your Chain

Your bike's chain needs regular lubrication to ensure smooth gear changes, but before applying lubricant, it's essential to clean the chain.

  1. Use a chain degreaser and a rag to remove dirt and grime. Run through the entire chain a few times to get grit and grime out.
  2. Once clean, apply new lubricant to the inside of the chain, focusing on the contact points. For more detailed instructions on cleaning your chain, you can check out this video.

7.2. Check if Your Wheels are Trued

Check if your wheels are trued (straight) by spinning them. Check for any abnormal side-to-side motions and if the disc brake rotor is rubbing against the brake pads. Bring your bike to your dealer if you find anything that’s worn or damaged.

7.3. Check for Signs of Wear

Some bike parts will wear over time, with the tires, chain, and brake pads most likely needing to be replaced sooner than other parts. In case you need to replace any parts of your Quick Haul Long, directly reach out to your Tern dealer.

7.4. Regular Service Check-Up

Your Quick Haul Long will need to be serviced regularly; all bikes need a quick tune-up one month after use so your dealer can adjust cables and other key parts.

After the first tune-up, we recommend that you take some time to discuss a regular service schedule with your dealer. How often you’ll bring your bike back for service depends on your riding frequency, typical load, weather conditions, road surfaces, and more. We recommend you read our Tern Bike Maintenance Schedule article for more detailed information.

8. Quick Haul Long Accessories

Your Quick Haul Long pairs with a wide array of Tern accessories for a variety of scenarios. Whether you need to take your kids to practice, go on a grocery run, or take that special someone out on a picnic, we’ve got you covered.

Keep in mind that your Quick Haul Long has a max gross vehicle weight (MGVW) of 190 kg (419 lb). This means that the weight of the bicycle, accessories, riders, cargo, and trailer must be less than the MGVW for safe riding.

8.1. Quick Haul Long Passenger Guide

The Quick Haul Long’s rear rack is rated for 90 kg (198 lb), allowing it to carry either one adult or up to two children.

To ensure safe passenger transport, it’s crucial to have these four essential items: a purpose-built rear seat, a handhold accessory, fixed foot support, and foot and leg protection. For detailed guidelines on safely transporting passengers on your Quick Haul Long, check the Quick Haul Long Passenger Guide.

8.2. Quick Haul Long Cargo Guide

Choosing the right Tern accessories to carry stuff largely depends on your specific needs. But whatever you choose, we advise evenly distributing your cargo weight for a balanced ride. Since there are so many different options to choose from, we recommend you check out the Quick Haul Long Cargo Guide to find your best cargo setup.
